Metals & Materials I Work With

At Gawria, I carefully select metals and materials that are not only beautiful but also meaningful. Each piece is crafted with intention, using high-quality, sustainable materials sourced from Morocco, where I live and work.

  • Brass – A stunning golden-toned metal made from copper and zinc, brass is known for its warm, vintage look. It naturally develops a soft patina over time, giving each piece a unique character. Easily polished, it offers a beautiful alternative to gold.
  • Stainless Steel – Strong, durable, and resistant to tarnish, stainless steel is perfect for everyday wear. It maintains its shine and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

All of my wire is handmade in Morocco, primarily sourced from Marrakesh. Crafted from different scraps, the wire can have varying amounts of copper and zinc, which means there may be slight color differences from batch to batch. I work directly with local artisans and suppliers, which makes each piece even more special and unique. Additionally, the crystal beads I use are also carefully chosen and purchased from local markets, adding to the authenticity and story behind every design.

Each material brings its own charm and energy, helping me create jewelry that is not only a work of art but a reflection of the love, history, and craftsmanship that went into it's making.

Caring for Your Gawria Jewelry

As with all natural materials, over time, copper may develop a beautiful patina—a greenish hue caused by oxidation. This is a natural process that occurs when copper reacts with air, moisture, and skin oils. Many people cherish this patina as it adds a unique character to the piece, but if you prefer to maintain the original shine, here are a few care tips:

  1. Avoid Moisture: Remove your jewelry before swimming, showering, or exercising. Moisture can accelerate oxidation.
  2. Keep Away from Chemicals: Harsh chemicals like perfumes, lotions, and cleaning agents can cause the copper to tarnish faster.
  3. Store Properly: When not in use, store your jewelry in a dry, cool place, ideally in a soft pouch or box to prevent friction with other pieces.
  4. Cleaning: If your piece starts to tarnish, you can gently polish it with a soft cloth or use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to restore its original shine. Avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.

To prevent tarnishing, you can apply a thin layer of carnauba wax. Carnauba wax is a natural product that acts as a protective coating, helping to resist tarnishing by creating a barrier against moisture and air. This is a popular method for preserving copper’s shine. Simply apply a small amount of wax to your piece and buff it in with a soft cloth. You can reapply it every few months as needed.

We recommend embracing the natural beauty of your copper pieces, but if you prefer to maintain their original finish, taking these steps can help ensure your Gawria jewelry stays as stunning as the day you received it.
